I think that the Ted Ex talk done by Plan B was interesting as he wasn’t targeting his usual target audience. He was looking for more of the upper-classes and Middle-class demographic. He wanted to reach out to people who haven’t heard about him or don’t know about his opinion. Plan B thinks that society haven’t cared for the people who they should’ve and have demised the Youth and have done things they’ve angered this demographic.
Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?
I think that Plan B is targeting the middle-classes with this Ted Talk and he was trying to appeal to more of the people in the power. Ted talks aren’t usually listened to by the working class and these talks target the middle-classes. He would be Targeting the ABC1-C1 demographic. As  that group has the greatest amount of power. Plan B is trying to spread his theory on Youth to more of the people that could change that, instead of producing music videos for people who already have the same theory. He is also trying to target the Reformer Psychographic range. He is targeting this group of people as they like making their own decisions using the information that is provided.
What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?
Plan B thinks that the media are trying to influence the decision making of people and are trying to say universally that the youth are bad. He is saying that the Youth are being targeted and demonized by people. He thinks that the media target and demonize people in Council houses and youth in general. HE thinks that this is part of the problem and they should do more positive stories instead.

In addition, Plan B also thinks that the Media have created a moral panic about youth and whenever youth is metioned it is always negative. He thinks that this moral panic has resulted in the youth becoming apathetic to the society and excluding themselves from society.

Making of Ill Manors

In the making of Ill manors the director showed me what I had already suspected. The film was designed to be hard-hitting and the director wanted people to question themselves. In addition, as he grew up in a similar area to the one the film was set.It would be fair to say that he has a clear vision and knew how to fulfil it. Furthermore, I also think that this offers an alternative viewpoint of youth and it offers some kind of explanation to people. The director wanted people to question their opinion of the youth and he wanted to do this by offering an explanation from his characters.

We also learnt that this film was extremely hard to film. The actors were all amateur and hardly any of them received training. The locations were all real, the crack den could be an example of this. In addition, the film was also hard to film as people would recognize the people in the film and they'd approach them. Furthermore, the amateur   actors needed more reassurance from the director and they also found it more of a struggle. The director also played a part emotionally and ensured that the people had the confidence to act in this film.

I think that the majority of the target audience are youth and they would range between 16-30. The majority of these people would've grown up in a estate or knew somebody who did. These are the people who would watch this show for entertainment purposes. Another target audience for this film would be 20-40 year old people. These people would fit in to the Reformers of the world. These people would be seeking a explanation for the riots. They would be Middle-class.

I don't think that the film has set out what it wanted to achieve. I think that it allowed people to have further evidence of what is wrong with working class people and allowed more people to gather this view. I think that it has an  false and largely untrue  story line and it showed all of the pre-existing stereotypes to help them sell this story. However, I do think that the director has created a hard-hitting film and that it does make people think and generate emotion for people. Overall, I don't think that Plan B has met what he has wanted to achieve, but he has been effective in creating a hard- hitting, thought- proving film.

Ill Manors Trailer

A trailer should reveal certain things and allow the audience to work out what is going to happen in the show. It should usually leave the audience with an enigma code and something to make them watch the show. It should briefer introduce the characters and allow the people to gather an opinion of them.Sound is used to add the to mystique around the trailer.Their is usually some information about who has made the film and gives some quotes about what people thought of the quote. If this was a high-budget film and the film1 was sold on the stars, they would include the stars of the show in the show. The trailer also introduces some of the brief themes of the film, for instance, it introduces drugs, violence and prostitution in the trailer. All trailers have a 3 part structure, which could relate to Todorov's Equilibrium theory. They have a beginning, middle and end.  The beginning is usually when the institution information is shown. The institution information is who made the film and the production company. The middle is when the music is more prominent and the voice- over adds the information for the audience, the middle is key for a trailer as it is when people view the most things about the trailer.

Trailers are usually on places like YouTube and other sides. Some production companies distribute their trailers in cinema, radio. Some good budget films ensure that their film is distributed by Television. It sometimes costs the company to distribute their Film via these platforms. The only platform in which it doesn't cost anything is Social Media. For a small budget film like Ill manors, they would utilized these platforms as much as possible. In addition, most of there target audience is on social media so it could even be more effective than the more expensive distribution methods. Some bigger production companies also use Billboards. The bigger the production company, the more Television and Radio and Billboard  adverts you would see. For a small Budget film like Ill manors, you wouldn't see as much adverts, however alternative ways would be used more.

I think Ill manors target audience is Young and between the 16- 45 age range. They would've watched other films in this genre like Kidulthood and Adulthood. The purpose of the person who is watching this show could be to see an alternative view of the London and the UK. I am aware that this film is an 18 Certificate, however I think that this film appeals greatly to 16 year olds, therefore I think that the "real target audience" is 16-45 year olds. Furthermore, I think that the person who is watching this would be Middle- Working class. I don't think that this film would appeal to Upper Class people as they wouldn't want to view the alternate representation of the UK.They would be Earning between 16,000 a year to 23,000. They would be in the Reformer and Mainstream Groups. I do think that this film would appeal to Aspirer as the Drug dealers are seeking wealth or respect, I didn't include it because they're getting wealth through means that aren't ideal.

The trailer shows information about the Director Ben Drew a.k.a "Plan B". His name is one of the selling points for the film. In addition, this film is lottery funded, which means that certain stipulations would've had to be met, in order to receive this money. This was Ben Drew first role as a Director, However he already had a good reputation for Rapping and previous screen roles in Films like Adulthood. The director decided to utilise amateur actors in his film. These actors were from places within London. Amateur actors allowed him to give back to the community that he is from and allow people to make a name for themselves. Ill manors had mixed reception by people. With some newspapers Headlining. "Rapper Plan B's Film so awful he should now contemplate Plan C" Daily Mail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/reviews/article-2156210/Rapper-Plan-Bs-film-debut-Ill-Manors-awful-contemplate-Plan-C.html. On the other hand an different news papers headlined "Plan B's Ill Manors is the true Dark reality".The
Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/may/27/ill-manors-plan-b-ben-drew-interview. The common view would be somewhere in the middle.

I think that the genre is successfully shown through the characters.I think that the usage of the character and the fact that their amateur  adds to the effect of this. I also think that if this film didn't use amateur  actors this show wouldn't be as effective. Furthermore, the storyline in my opinion was one well, the story was illustrated well through the characters. I also think  that characters in this show are stereotypical and they're all common for this genre.Overall, I think that Ill Manors is a good film and it has all of the key conventions of a film in this genre.

Learner Response

LR: WWW:Good, independent ideas - Thinking for yourself. EBI: Include more theory- add a paragraph to the audience/ representations. 20/48=E LR: Do two more paragraphs on Audience and representations Representation: The representation of the cast who are all Male and middle class white could relate to theory. They are represented well as they would be able to hold more power in status. For instance, middle- class white hold more power in status, therefore they wouldn’t be able to be stereotypes. In addition, the fact the BBC predominantly employs White-middle-class male could be saying a lot about the morality of this public service provider. Furthermore, the foreign- sounding guy representation as a bit of a daredevil could've been done. When he went Scuba-diving. As he is the outsider of the group He is presented as the daredevil, despite fitting into the working class white demographic. This could be an example of x theory. Overall, I think that the BBC has created a representation that is appropriate for the people it appeals to. This show was shown at 9.00, at the time which is commonly associated with documentaries that appeal to the ABC1 Demographic. I wouldn't see the BBC ever creating a negative representation of the Middle- Class white demographic. Audience: I think that the Audience of this show would be people who are in the ABC1 demographic, who are educated and probably have Young Children. This show was scheduled on a Wednesday. That doesn't clash with any other shows. I think that the BBC only did this show to help them meet their Inform and educate aims. In addition, due to the Technological advances of i's rivals I think it was key for the BBC to produce a high quality show The BBC had to do something to show that they could keep up with the time and match their rivals in terms of quality. In addition, this was one of the BBC first shows to help them successfully target people who have upgraded their Televisions. As they have now opened a multimillion pound building to help them stay with the times. That could add evidence to that view. I think that this was the most important show that helped them evolve to the times.

Ill manors

Ill manors is a film that is directed by Ben Drew (Plan B) it is about the struggles of the UK underworld and the hopelessness of somebody who only has drugs to help them survive. This film was set in the backdrop of the London Riots and it offers an alternative view of what happened. It was a small Budget UK drama. Its budget was an Estimated 100,000 and it was given an 18 certificate. The cast of the show were amateurish and they didn’t have any experience. The Main Actors are: Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrin, Natalie Press and Nick Sagar. Riz Ahmed and Ed Skein are the two closet characters and they both grew up in care. There are many shots that have shown them growing up together with the latter being more troubled. Whilst the other character Aaron seems to have more of a heart. This could be shown by the prostitution sequence in which Aaron seems to stick up for the female. Ed Skrien could be an example of the Dysfunction of the Care system that worked well for Aaron, but Ed clearly has some unresolved problems from his childhood. This film could also be about the Humiliation and the Male mind set when they have had such bad childhoods and the Drug culture for the user and the seller. There are many examples of people that have been embarrassed. For example, when Marcel is held at gunpoint by Kirby. Marcel was humiliated, this resulted in Kirby death. Another theme inside this show could be how easily people could be lured in to this. This could be shown by the how easily Jake wanted his world. He knew what the gang did, however he allowed them to manipulate him to beat up his own friend and kill somebody else. This could be an example of the appeal of the UK underworld. One scene that was rather disturbing was the one in which the female was prostituted to pay back for what she stole. The girl was sold off to a load of sleazy males for petty cash. This again could be an example of the Dysfunction that has plagued Ed live. This could also show the hopelessness of somebody that has nothing to live for apart from drugs. In addition, I think that the director is trying to send a message to the audience about the struggles that these people face, perhaps suggesting that society should do more to help these people. Overall, I think that Ill manors were well made and it would be hard to beat with the limited budget. I think that they raised awareness of the UK underworld. Considering that it was released after the euphoria surrounding the Olympics and the Jubilee I think that this film raises awareness of the troubles of the UK and gives people a stiff reminder of what happened in the previous summer. I would rate this film 7/10.
