WWW: Good attempt to use theory/terminology.
LR:
This advert is original and positive as it takes a general advert and makes it more modern. This helps to widen the adverts appeal. Usually in adverts in this genre use shock tactics and statistics to show the importance of road safety. This advert doesn't do this. This advert uses physical theatre in conjunction with classical music to show the importance of it. I think that this was key to the success of the advert as I think that adverts that use scare tactics unintentionally deter people from viewing their advert. Having an advert that isn't that obvious in terms of the message it is trying to convey, would properly have a wider range of people viewing it. In addition, as their isn't no dialogue inside this video, the appeal broadens internationally.
This video is also very original as it seems to have both an emotional impact and a positive message. I think this is what has made this video viral and have many people relate to it. The slogan is also positive. They have chosen bright colours and it subverts from other adverts which usually have colours that're more serious. The government road safety campaign could be an example of this, as this choses black and hyellow as colours. I also think that the slow-motion also impacts the viewers greatly, It slows down the crashing process and shows the impact it could have on your family. In this sequence their is also shots of the young girls hand and the women. This could relate to Propps seven spheres of action, as the man could be shown as the princess that is in need, perhaps the seatbelt could be the donor, as the seatbelt could aide the man in his journey to work.

Print Platform
Why is this
platform being used?
Before this
film was realised Plan B and any director wanted to get as much press attention
as possible. Every article that was written was for promotional purposes and
all of them had different target audiences. The Print platform allows many
people to view a balanced, logical argument about the film. Print in general is
a good way of promotion as it is the oldest way that somebody could promote
things. It also appeals to a mass audience at all times.
The Men’s
Health magazine is mainly focused on Plan B transformation in to a slimmer
body. It talks about how Plan B changed himself during a time that he was
editing the film that he had made. This article had been made for motivational
reasons. I think that this article is
trying to show that anybody could lose weight no matter how busy that you are.
If Plan B could manage it whist editing a film, anybody could lose weight. This
would fit in well with the Magazine as the magazine is about Men’s Fitness.
The
Guardian Platform is also used to help to promote Ill Manors. This is a
mainstream newspaper that promotes equality and liberal ideas. This is a
newspaper that would be more likely to give the film that discusses social
issues a better reception than most newspapers. This allows the magazine
Do the
articles do more than entertain? How?
I think
that these article do more than entertain they also inform people about the
struggles of editing and motivate people in to this field. For instance, the
men’s fitness magazine informs people about how Plan B has changed his body
image during the time that he was editing his film. I think that this article
has a purpose of motivating people in to improving their body image. I think
this because the article talks about his new found confidence when he changed
his image.
I also
think that the Short-list article is more about how the film was made and how
difficult it was. I think that the article was more about the film and the key
themes of the film. I think that the narrative of this magazine was how did you
make the film and was it difficult.
I also
think that the Q magazine is more based around the musical talent of Plan B.
This article only talks about the musical side of plan B.As Q magazine is a
magazine that is about music. Why would they want to discuss film making I think
that the Q magazine article promoted the film that Plan B the least. I do think
that Q magazine has a different target audience and more knowledgeable audience
than Plan B film is aimed at. However, I do think that Q magazine appeals
greatly to two Psycho graphic groups. The Reformers and the Mainstreamer. For
this film to be successful I do think they should appeal to these two
psycho graphic groups as I think they’re the largest groups.
Does this
platform allow the audience to participate/contribute?
The
guardian has a comment section which helps the users of the website interact
and say their opinion of the film and issue. This is done at the bottom of the guardian
page. I think that print platform allows people to easily interact and share. The
entire website has links to social networking sites that would allow the users
of the product to share the product with people that they may have similar
interests to.
What
codes/conventions of print interviews are apparent in the examples?
One of the
conventions that print work offers is questions. Print work also offers
customers pictures or other visual elements. Some questions are asked more
formally, whist the fitness magazine has some kind of narrative over the story.
The question that the article asks generally seems to fit the magazine that it
is about, the men fitness magazine could be an example of this.
Another key
convention that is common in some of these articles is an expert opinion. This is
most common in newspaper articles. I think that this is done as it adds authority
and validity to the authors’ opinion. An example of this could be found in the guardian
article.
How is
narrative used to tell a story in each text?
In one of
the magazines the article uses narrative to show the Lad mentality that Plan B
has. In this article I think that this article uses narrative to show what kind
of person he is. His reply when asked about the Olympics could be an example of
this. This article used narrative to help show some of the ways that this music
artist thinks. In addition, this reply alone could show what target audience
this magazine appeals to.
In the Men’s
fitness magazine the article also uses narrative to show how hard it was for
Plan B to change his image whist editing Ill manors. The questions and the replies
suggested that it was extremely difficult and this period was tiring. The questions
that this magazine asked were about how difficult it was. The readers of Men’s
fitness are people that have either changed their body or desire to change
their Body. I think that this magazine
narrative is to help motivate people in to changing their body. The artist
talks about how his motivation and happiness levels have changed due his new
body image.
The
guardian article talks the most about the actual film that was created and the
issue and the spark behind the film. This article discusses about the social
issue and how people could feel about this. I think that the narrative of this
article is about the issue. The narrative theme in this article is about how
the film was made and how it was. The Men’s
health magazine also has a section for comments however; this doesn’t seem to
be in use as nobody did comment. It is important for a magazine to allow the
readers to interact as they could meet people that have similar interests and
viewpoints. It is also important as if somebody has a complaint about the film
they could help to handle it. Comments are important as it allows people to see
whether their successful.

Magazine Research
NME has a similar target audience and appeal to the type of show that we are trying to produce. I could use the Artist feature in my magazine.
I think that the Audience of we love pop and the show that we are trying to create would both have similar traits.I could use the celebrity exclusive that this magazine uses.
I think that this audience of E4 would also like James Bond. I like the way this magazine is layout and the way the features of magazine is done. I would like to do a similar thing to this in my magazine.
This magazine has many features that I could use and that is aimed at a similar audience to E4. I like the way this magazine uses features like Gossip and Giveaways to appeal to the audience.
I like the way that the main person in this magazine is. The person is towards the the right. I would like my character to be a similar position.
Title of Publication-
The Title of this publication is Doctor Who. This magazine is based around the show Doctor Who. This show is on the BBC and it is usually shown at 7.00pm. This edition of this show celebrates the 50 years that this show has gone on for.
The Central Image- The Central image is of the current Doctor Who (Matt Smith). I think that he is at the front as he is the current Doctor and proberly plays a key part in the Show. Behind him is the two previous doctor. This could suggest that the two other Doctors play a less significant part in the "Day of the Doctor"
The Cover Line- The main cover line says "The Day of the Doctor". The font is large and it looks relevant to the Genre. I think that the font looked like something you could see in a Sci-Fi film. The Font is located right in the middle of the magaizine. This helps to draw readers attention.
The Slogan- The Slogan for this magazine says " celebrating 50 years". The numbers are in bold. This is located at the top of the magazine. The slogan suggests what could be in the magazine for instance, some memoriable moments or hints about the Day of the Doctor show.
Competitions and Giveaways- The magazine also features competitions and giveaways along the Gold side bar.
The Real Target Audience- I think that the real target audience of this magazine is from the age of 13- 60. This show is on a public sevice broadcaster and it is usually scedueled around 7. This is the time where families and most people watch televion. I think that this magazine is aimed at a slightly older audience than the Show. I think this magazine is aimed at people that are 16-40.
Barcode, Date, Price- The Barcode, Date and the Price are located at the bottom right. This is done so that people could view the whole front image and hopefully be atractted to it. A company would hope that somebody would view this magazine front cover and this appeals to them. If it appeals to them they would'nt care as much about price.
Name Checks- This magazien also Name checks the two previous doctors, David Tennant and Matt Smith and an excluxive chat this magazine has had with them. However, I don't think that it is the stars that are selling this magazine. I think that the show is greater than the Stars and the show has more appeal than the stars do.
Colour Scheme- The colour scheme of this magazine is black, gold and red. These are the three key colours in this magazine. I think that the Black goes well agaist the Gold. In addtion, I think that the Gold is used as it is a celebratory colour and this magazine is celebrating 50 years.
Free items- This magazine also giveaways some posters and some collectables with this issue. This would allow the person who is buying this product to have a sense of value when their buying the product.

Ill Manors- Synergy
The website that Plan B
created in the film that he had directed Ill manors was used to create a
hub for the marketing campaign that had
coincided with the launch of the film. The website has:
·
Synopsis
·
Images of the film
·
Behind the scene footage
·
Links to purchase the soundtrack and the film
·
Reaction
·
It also has a part about Ben Drew
The Synopsis
The synopsis of the film is
used to offer some brief guidelines on
what the film is about. It helps to entice the customer to the film and it
gives a summary of the plot. The synopsis of the film is usually find on other
sites like IMDB, however it is also important for the website of the film. In
addition, for the viewer of the website to fully understand some of the stills
they’re on the website, the synopsis would help them do this.
Images of the Film
The still section on the
website helps the reader to see what the film is about, who is in the film that
would be shown and show some of the settings. It is important for a low-budget
film to show some stills as it would help the viewer get an idea for film, therefore
helping to sell the film.
Film Review/ Critics
People would only watch
things that have good ratings; they seek people opinions on the film. If they
like the film, people would like to watch it. For example, most of the people
who would endorse films like this would be celebrities, therefore they would be
opinion formers. Having an opinion former endorse your product would inevitably
increase the sales of the film. The poster has fellow musicians like t Tinchy Stryder and
Keys, both of them are opnion former.
The director also used the more conventional means to endorse this film,
magazines and newspapers. Good reviews will help target people who arent in
Plan B fan club and have a greater appeal to people.
Behind the scenes footage
Behind the scenes footage
helps to sell the product as many people would see how it was made. You would
usually see the actor talking about a character. Some of the people who are in
the film and a bit about them. It shows how things were made and shot, the
train scene for example . Behind the
scens footage allows people to see how it was made, what kind of people are in
the film,
Links to purchase Soundtrack and Film
Any website for any film
should have a link to purchase the product. The website was created to sell the
film to people. A link to buy the product that the website is selling should be
on it.
A feature on Ben Drew
The website also has a feature of directors, why he planned
the film, what message he was trying to get across. His intentions for some of
the key shots and themes within the film. Why he included these shots and why
he did the film. This allows the audience to know about the message clearly and
decide if they like the message. If they do they would purchase the product.
Synergy
The website makes use of synergy as it has a link to the trailer
and a link to purchase the products. The website also has links to Plan B
website. This helps to sell the aritist behind the product.
Jonathan Ross- Interview
Jonathan Ross show is shown at 10.00pm on a Saturday. It
features a series a A-list and B-list stars who talk about what they’ve been
doing recently. This show appeal to people in the A,B, C1 and D socio-economic
demographic. It would appeal the Mainstream psycho graphic show, as this show
appeal to almost everybody. In this interview Plan B represents himself as
Smart a well-spoken. He talks about series subjects extremely well. Some people
who many be watching this show may know of Plan B as a typical rapper who gets
up to bad things. However, this appearance on this show helps to change that
idea and Plan B represents himself as more than a Rapper. He represents himself
as a leader for change. At the beginning he discusses how he was kicked out of
school and the kind of person he was. He says in a articulate way, something that
somebody who was kicked out shouldn’t be able to do . Plan B’s appearance on
Johnathan Ross helped him appear as more than a rapper
Soccer
AM-Plan B
Soccer
AM is a football based show that is shown at 9-12pm, the show is aimed at people
10-25 and it appeals to the Psychographics group C2,D AND E. I think it appeals
to this demographic as they would be more likely to be interested in a football
based show. The show doesn’t have many A-list celebrities and most of the
guests are from the UK. I think that this show appeals to Aspirers and
Mainstreamers greatly. I think that it appeals to aspirers as they would want
to be the footballers, celebrities of the world. I think that it would also
appeal to the Mainstreamers as they’re people who would Like sport and football
is a mainstream sport.
Plan
B representation of himself is the exact opposite to the one the one he has
shown in Johnathan Ross. In this show he
isn’t well- spoken, his appearance is totally different. The tone of voice he
is speaking is different. I think that this is due to people who would be watching
this show . I Think that in Johnathan
Ross he represents himself as a man who is articulate, in this show he
represents himself as a unarticulated male who became famous.

1.)
Research all of the institutions involved in
the production of ill manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution
to the film was?
Ill manors was filmed in Forest Gate , London.
It was written by Ben drew (Plan B) and it was distributed by Revolver
Entertainment. Ill manors was funded by 3 different studio and production
companies, Film London Microwave, The BBC films , which helps fund British films.
The director was only 21 was he wrote this film. The producer name was called Atif
Ghani, cinematography was by Gary Shaw. The film is based on actual stories or
things he knew from that estate.
2.)
How much did Ill Manors cost to produce?
Ill Manors had a Budget of 100,000 and it used
it to the full amount. This was a fairly small budget.
3.)
What is
the Target Audience for Ill Manors?
As the certicate of the film is 18. Some
people many say that the target audience from 18-40.However, I think that this
film appeal greatly to people who are under 18 and I think that the real target
audience is 15-40. It
4.)
Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributor of Ill manors is Revolver
Entertainment. They were sold the rights to the film. The film was distributed fairly
well as it earned £453,570 in
total gross and had some good reviews by fans in amazon and Rotten Tomatoes.
5.)
Compare this with a big budget blockbuster.
What are the main similarities and differences?
I think that comparing Ill manors to a big
blockbuster is unfair as Ill manors had a far smaller budget. However, in both
genres the director wants to make the best film that they possibly could. In addition,
both of them are also similar as both of them have a message or a moral to get
across. They’re also similar in terms that they both had large marketing campaigns
and were both shown on cinemas.
The one key difference between the two genres
is that one had a fairly small budget, the other ones have a large. I think
that this had benefited Ill manors as they had to use real locations and use inexperienced
Actors. It is also common for films like this to have a small budget. I think
that having a small budget has helped Tesco.
6.)
How
does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?
I think that trailer did Balance plot
with spectacle, however they did have more spectacle. It included many
different enigma codes within the trailer and some of the things within the
trailer foreshadowed later events .
7.)
How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film
will answer (Barthes: enigma codes)? Identify 3 ways/techniques. Use your notes
on the trailer to help.
The trailer attracts people to the
film right at the start of the trailer. The quote says “we are all products of environment;
some are harder to live in”. This leaves the reader thinking about what that means,
it also foreshadows what will happen later in the film. The trailer also shows some
of the issues that the film would be talking about, drugs and violence to name
a few, this helps to attract people. The film also ends with an enigma code,
which leaves the reader thinking about if the character would get shot.
10) Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate).
Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable
for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
This film has got an 18 certificate as it has:
·
Very strong violence
·
Scenes of Sexual activity or
sexual violence
·
discriminatory
language and behaviour
·
Frequent strong language
The difference between this and a 18 and a 15
is:
·
Very strong violence cannot be shown
·
Sexual activity or violence
·
Scenes of Horror or violence.

Exam Questions
Media
Representations: How is age/gender and ethnicity represented in the video?
I think that the representation of youth in this music video
is exaggerated and there is a negative representation of young people in this
video. All young people are represented in a negative way in order for Plan B
to show this lifestyle. There is also an elderly couple in this video, who is
being robbed. This could be an example of Plan B showing the elderly as
innocent and not a significant part of society. Furthermore, Plan B uses this
negative representation to help him get his point across. In this video there is a clip of a community
centre being closed down. The next shot is of a group of youths doing bad
things. The artist has used a negative representation in order for him to
suggest that these young people have nothing to do.
The music artist also uses a negative representation of
council estates. He uses this stereotype to suggest to people that it is easier
for people to get caught up in crime. There are many shots of the derelict estates
and many drug dealers in the Estate. This could relate to Perkins theory about
stereotypes being based on truth, as somebody who grew up on a council estate
is more likely to be involved in crime. Perhaps the artist is suggesting that
people in power should invest in council houses and ensure that these people
feel part of society.
In this video their also is a negative representation of all
the ethnicities within the video. There is a numerous ethnicity who have been
included in the video. I think that Plan B is trying to see how easy it is to
stereotype people in society. In addition, he was trying to say that people in
power generalise these people, they don’t care about the ethnicity of these
people or their story. By including all of these ethnicities it suggests that
Plan B thinks that generalising these people is dangerous. This could relate
Medhurst theory that stereotypes could be a shorthand to make decisions. The usage
of stereotypes to this audience allows people to stereotype them easier, or
allow them to justify their prejudices.
Media Audiences-
Who does this text appeal to/ Why?
I think that the music video appeals to Plan B usual target
audience, 15-35 year old. These people would’ve grown up or knew people in the
social under-class.This video would also appeal to the C1, C2, D, E as the D and E demographic range I think that his target audience are young and
in education. This show would appeal to the Reformer Psychographic range as
they would be the most concerned group and eager for change in the world. I
think that this would appeal to an older age as this is very factual and it is
talking about a social issue. In addition, protest songs are usually listened
to by an older audience. In addition, I think that Plan B would also like to
appeal to the mainstream group. This music video would only be successful if it
did appeal to the mainstreamers.
In addition, I think that this music video also appeals to
people who are interest or want reform in the world and are looking out for a
hero to do this. This video highlights some of the issues that social
underclass are having, it highlights them and places it on a broad scale. For
example, the stereotype that people have of people who live in council estates
and the lack of funding that these people face. These issues are broad and many
people think that people in power aren’t doing enough. As the artist has
highlighted some of these issues he has expanded the amount of people that he
is targeting.
Media Institutions-In what way is the
video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?
This music video is typical and it has all of the key
conventions that you would associate with this genre, which could be either Rap
or grime. This music video starts off with the warning stating it has explicit
genre. This is an important as people who don’t like explicit genre. It than
has a series of establishing shots and long shots. This helps to set the scene
of the music video with the fumes in the background being dark and images being
negative. This is common protest song to slightly hint at what would happen
next.
Most of this video is shot in a unused car park in the heart
of an estate. This setting is important for this genre as they should choose a
setting that is dark and it shouldn’t be shot in a studio. If this music video
was shot in a studio, it would lose must of the impact it has on the audience.
It is important for this Genre to show real places and real people and their
struggles. Having a unused car park as a
setting allows the element of realism, it also uses low key lighting which adds
to the effect of the video. In addition, this music video could also promote
inequality in a sarcastic manner. By using a car park, whist other rapper might
have studios could suggest that protest rappers are unequal due to them talking
about real issues. The use of car-park adds realism to the music video and it
allows it to appeal greater to people.
The editing of this music video and the variety of shots
that they use allow for the artist to create a very edgy feel. This adds the
authenticity of the music video. The use of fast-paced editing is common in
this genre. It allows the viewer of this music video to be on edge and this allows
the artist to create this unique feel. I think that this was done to resemble an
estate life could be like; the speed of editing could resemble how fast things
change, the combination of violence and suggestions of it, how angry people could
be. In addition, thing that is common in this genre is to have loads of
violence. This allows people to fulfil their expectations and it agrees with
the stereotypes that many people have. In addition, the amount of violence that
is in this music video could also suggest that placing many people in council
houses is dangerous.
